Established in the 1870s Deep Ellum was populated by former slaves & immigrated Europeans. Gentrified in 1890, the African American community and neighborhoods were forced out to make room for the industrial business looking to post shop in the area. It wasn’t long after, that warehouses and factories started to be constructed. In 1915 the first black architect to operate in the state of Texas created the Knights of Pythias Temple, which was one of the first professional buildings to serve the black community. Occupied by Black journalist, doctors & lawyers. Another fun fact that Dallas Colored High School, which is now known as Booker T Washington High, is where the wife of the architect taught school. Deep Ellum was a business district by day but a jazz and entertainment district by night. It became the home for a lot of jazz and blues musicians. It now serves as a club/bar, shopping district. These pictures capture the vibe of Deep Ellum.
